Conservation and additional construction at 35 Michelangelo Street, Jaffa
The Hussein Khoury family home was established in 1932 in the Neve Zedek neighborhood (now on Michelangelo Street), which was built on an empty plot between orchards by the steadfast residents of Jaffa.
The building was designed as a three-story residential structure by an unknown architect, but its distinctive characteristics reflect the local building tradition; the central atrium - these are mainly expressed in the floor plan design and the design of the entrances. In addition, the building is rich in decorative details; in construction, frames, wrought ironwork, indicating the wealth and importance of its original owners. The building's construction technology was influenced by the new technological knowledge to which these families were exposed.
The uniqueness of the building lies, on one hand, in its significant contribution to preserving the unique urban fabric of the neighborhood, which utilizes dense construction and a zero setback building line. On the other hand, its uniqueness is expressed in the unique combination it creates between modern construction technology and traditional-local construction, which together produce a magnificent structure rich in details.
The work on the building included the restoration and preservation of the building's facades and staircase room, and the design of an additional residential unit on the building's roof - deviating from the main building facades, in a way that is not visible from street level.
As part of the preservation works, it was decided to restore all the details in their original place and not to create new ones.
